Friends of Amelia Street Urban Forest

Friends of Amelia Street Urban Forest is a grassroots group of neighbors and environmental advocates working to restore and reimagine a unique green space that sits directly on the campus of Amelia Street School, a Richmond Public School serving students with intellectual and physical disabilities.

The urban forest—nestled between the Randolph, Maymont, and Byrd Park neighborhoods—offers a rare opportunity: a public school greenspace in the heart of the city that can be transformed into an outdoor classroom, a sensory-rich environment, and a shared community gathering space. Like many specialized schools, Amelia Street operates without some of the traditional support systems—such as a formal PTA—which makes community involvement all the more impactful and appreciated.

That’s where we come in: Friends of Amelia Street Urban Forest formed out of a shared desire to steward this land not just for nature’s sake, but for the well-being and educational enrichment of the young people who spend their days learning just steps away from the forest. Our vision is to create and steward a vibrant, inclusive space that supports environmental education, fosters wellness, and strengthens neighborhood connections. We’re planting native trees and pollinator meadows, improving stormwater management, and restoring soil health—while also creating accessible pathways, learning stations, and opportunities for sensory exploration.

Through partnerships with VCU Sustainability, The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Richmond Master Gardeners, and generous local volunteers, we’re building something powerful: a living classroom and community resource, rooted in equity, accessibility, and care. We believe that when schools thrive, neighborhoods thrive—and that by coming together around this urban forest, we can give Amelia Street students the outdoor experiences they deserve, while also creating a place of joy, connection, and healing for the entire community.

We invite you to lend your hands, your voice, or your support. Together, we can grow something extraordinary—right here on Amelia Street.

✨ It begins with a pile of mulch… ✨

This fresh delivery is getting us one step closer to spring at Amelia Street 🌸
At our next volunteer work day on February 20, this mulch will be spread along our garden paths to keep them accessible and welcoming, and around our trees to help protect roots, retain moisture, and support healthy growth as the seasons change.

Every scoop helps prepare for spring blooms — and every set of hands makes the work lighter and more joyful. Join us February 20 1pm-3pm- signup link in bio!
These bitter winter temperatures that keep us all hunkered down inside tend to spark a little daydreaming—about warmer days, shared work, and coming together as a community again. And we’ve got just the thing to look forward to.

Are you off next Monday for MLK Day? Looking for a meaningful way to connect with your community?

In the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy of service, our members will be out volunteering around the city on Monday—and we hope you’ll join us! MLK Day is a powerful reminder that caring for our neighborhoods and showing up for one another is an act of service.

There are so many great opportunities happening across Richmond, including right here in our neighborhood. Check out CFEngage’s website to find a volunteer opportunity that speaks to you and spend the day giving back alongside your community.

Let’s honor the day by serving together. 💚
Who else has been soaking in these stunning sunsets lately? 🌅

There’s something especially magical about a winter sunset—the crisp air, quiet moments, and soft golden light settling over the trees. At Amelia Street, these evenings remind us how special it is to have green spaces right in our own neighborhood, offering beauty, calm, and connection even in the colder months.

We hope you’ve had a chance to pause, look up, and enjoy a sunset with us this season. 💛
🌳 Tree Week at Amelia Street Urban Forest! 🌳

We had such a great time joining @reforestrichmond Tree Week again this year! 💚 Our community came together — familiar faces and new friends alike — to celebrate trees, connection, and stewardship.

Together, we tackled a few important projects to help our space thrive:
🌿 Freed a mulberry from a tangle of ivy vines
🦌 Protected a young oak from the deer
🌱 Planted several new trees generously donated by our volunteer Lauren (straight from her own yard — thank you, Lauren!)
🏡 And did some preventative work to keep the greenhouse ready for its next stage of repairs

It’s always inspiring to see what we can accomplish when we care for our shared green spaces together. Here’s to another successful Tree Week and many more seasons of growth at Amelia Street! 💚🌳

We celebrated today by coming together as community and helping to beautify the entrance at Amelia Street School (@ameliastreet_rps @ameliastreetwellness )

There’s just something about a vision becoming reality, whether it’s something small or something big.

The new principals at Amelia Street immediately saw a need to improve the front beds, and our Friends of Amelia Street group was already brainstorming how to make this happen. And today, many thanks to our generous financial donors who provided the funds to purchase the plants, and our generous volunteers who gave their time this morning- the beds are planted! We can’t wait to see the plants settle in and thrive!
💙🤍💛

Keep following us… we have more big dreams we hope to see come to fruition… like planting out the other front entrance, creating outdoor learning opportunities for students, hosting community events in the green space, and restoring the greenhouse behind the school.

Together we can make all of these things happen! 💪
